Has anyone seen a follower rest for this lathe? I have a indexing attachment that fastens in the stud gear position. I also have a steady rest that was patched up eons ago. Still looking to make a steady rest similar to the atlas with a dovetail on the cross slide.

what a wonderful find! i love old tools and old machines
do you have pictures of the lathe?
i'd be very interested to see them.
we had a local guy that was trying to sell a 4-1/2 with pedal drive intact, for $1,500.00
i don't know if it sold, of if he took it off the list for being up too long.
i considered getting it, but sadly i don't have room for too many extra toys that i don't need anymore :confusion:

Here is the headstock rebuilt by my father inlaw. He worked at johnson and johnson making the tooling for tin band aid boxes. He had a stroke 20 years ago. I finished the carriage rack and pinion (broken) and remaining stuff myself.15184137089002083830437.jpg

i'm sorry to hear of your father in law's misfortune.
hopefully he can/did share some of his vast knowledge with you.
very nice, i hope to see more of the fruits of your labor soon!
very nice machine!

My Barnes 13 came with this steady rest. The lathe shipped with a steady rest, but this appears to be a similar vintage steady rest adapted for use with this lathe using a riser and a T-bar that clamps under the ways. There is an optional follow rest in the 1912 catalog.

My Barnes 13 came with this steady rest. <Snip>
That is a nice piece! The one that came with my 4 1/2 is shaped similar, but goes all the way across the ways, and doesn't have the hinge... It can barely handle 1" tube... So I may have to build one from scratch...
