hi i picked up a rockwell wood/metal bandsaw with a blade welder. 1966 vintage it welds steel blades fine. i have been told it takes a special welder to do bi metal blades? does any one have knowage of differances . don't want to by a roll of bi metal stock and not be able to use it any info would help thanks charlie

I have welded bi-metal blades on our Grob saw/welder at work with no problems.
I have done dozens of them at work in the last 5 years with no ill effects of any klnd, the blades held up fine.

I believe the caveats about welding bi-metal blades come from the very early days of bi-metal prior to eb welding (electron beam) to a spring steel back. Originally the entire blade was HSS, and did require a special welder. I've welded literally hundreds of bi-metal blades on a Do-All and had no problems. Do be careful with the annealing cycle--make sure you cool slowly by pulsing the anneal switch for progressively shorter times. These blades seem to be more sensitive to cooling rate than say a straight hard edge hard back carbon.

Regards
Bob
