Thanks Holes Creek, looks like your ball turner has inspired some others to start turning them out!

I appreciate your advise; before grinding a trough, I'll give heat treatment annealing a shot. It's the journey, not the destination; will add to learning experience; I'll post results, might be a few days

just about finished ball turner this morning. Angle ground trough for 3/8 bit setting my hoody pullover on fire in the process (from the sparks); Tried annealing first, but that caused a lot of smoke in my kitchen stove, setting off smoke alarms and the wife;

not pretty but it turns

looks like sucess to me.. mine isnearly done hope it works as well, just making the tool post and handle now
