Is there a trick to removing the wheel on a Baldor bench grinder?

My 7" wheel had become a 4" wheel after only twenty years or so.

I had a effing awful time getting the left hand nut loose. Nothing to hold the motor from turning. Finally got it with a monster channel lock and an impact wrench. there must be an easier way. Some way to hold the arbor from turning that i missed???

nope, it's one of my peaves, as there is no way to tighten it either. Why don't they broach the end and put a hex in it ?

As the left hand nut (left hand threads) is loosening, the right hand nut is tightening. if there’s a trick, it’s this. Sometimes the left loosens without over tightening the right, sometimes a jam nut on either side as appropriate makes the difference.

Since one end came loose, can you take the wheel off that end & double nut that side if there's enough threads? Then you will have something to hold to get the other side off.

Edit: I was also gonna say maybe strap wrench & impact wrench.... I missed that you already got it off.

NOW, the light comes on. I tried holding the other nut, but did not realize the one I wanted was LEFT HAND thread. So, of course, i just loosened the wrong side.

Then, I discovered it must be left hand, but did not go back to holding both nuts. I now see holding both nuts and going left hand to loosen the left wheel and right hand to loosen the right wheel is the trick.

i will be nearly 100 when this wheel wears out, think I will remember this trick???

Yup that would work but as Winegrower said you risk overtightening one side if the other side is stubborn.

I put on a pair of gloves, grab the shaft of the side I want to remove with one hand, putting pressure on the wheel, then use an impact to remove the nut. Same for installing.

Don't use the impact for tightening, as you could overtorque. Hold the wheel with the gloved hand and tighten with a regular wrench. You are compressing the blotter paper washers which are what transfers the torque from the motor. Too much pressure could damage the paper washers and even the wheel.
