OK im done buying vintage chucks off ebay that dont work properly.
what is a good 4 jaw and 3 jaw chuck to get.

i know buck chucks are the best...but im not sure i wanna put a 500 dollar chuck on a 500 dollar lathe.

Even in a Chinese chuck, you aren't going to get a decent quality new one for under about $250. Another good US maker is Pratt-Bernerd (I never can remember who owns them now). But they aren't much if any cheaper. But I learned decades ago not to consider what I paid for something when considering something else to go with it. The two prices may have no logical connection. Which is generally the case when comparing used equipment prices to new equipment prices.
