I recently acquired a Atlas QC-54, so far I am having issues with the 1/2 nut easily disconnecting . The leaver that engages the 1/2 nut seems sloppy and sort of mushy feeling when you push it down to engage it. If you hold light pressure on the leaver the 1/2 nut stays engaged, if you dont it disengages if pressure is put on the carriage such as a cut. .

It's probably time to pull the skirt. It's an easy task. Lots of stuff accumulates there, and there are some significant wear patterns on the moving parts that occur on the Atlas. Not too big a deal to repair, but you will need eyes on in order to fix it. Best case is it just needs cleaning.

Take a close look at the leadscrew also- it could be worn and/or loaded with gunk

Likely the half nuts are worn and/or full of crud as mentioned. The handle has a ball and spring to hold it in position, you should check that it is still there and working.

The scroll for the engagement of the half nuts can become worn.
the scroll mechanism is made from zamak and is easily worn and kinda fragile in comparison to steel or bronze components
