I have inherited an Atlas mini lathe sold by Sears. I know that it was purchased sometime in the early 1970's but I can't find a model # on the machine. Operation of the machine is pretty straight forward, except for the operation of the back gear. The lever is on the back side of the housing and it operates as it should. The problem is this: I can't find any way to release the bull gear from the spindle. I have looked everywhere I can think of and see no pin or bolt or other way to disengage the gear so that the back gears can be used. Does anyone out there know how it is released on the these small Atlas machines?

There should be a pin in the bull gear that goes through tp the pully. Post a pic will help.
 
By "mini" do you mean the 109, or something like the 618?
