Picked up the milling attachment for my Atlas 6" 10100 and it's missing the solid jaw. Can I use just a plain piece of steel bar stock as a vise jaw or does it need to be a specific grade steel and hardened ?? I do have the V-grooved jaw, the flat plain one was missing. Thanks.

Typically jaws are either hardened steel, or Aluminum "Soft Jaws". You'd be fine with a piece of bar stock, though you likely want to make sure it is machined flat.

So long as its flat use what you currently have to get the job done then when you come across a better material for a good price buy some to replace the old set. You could use wood if you really needed to get something done if need be so long as it will hold the part securely!

I have a 12" Craftsman lathe with the 500A milling attachment. It was missing the jaw inserts. I bought the 9-504 for $16.40 and the 9-505 for $20.40 direct from Clausing back in December 2017. Still in the box and have not used them so I can't comment on what they are made of. Not sure if the part numbers I listed apply to your 6-inch version.
