Notice here so bear with me.

I picked up an atlas 10 D a few months back and while I was taking apart the traverse gearbox, I goofed up and forgot to adjust the nut on top for the preload gear I think it is? Anyways, when I kicked on the traverse selector, it broke two gears in the housing… followed by a bunch of cussing, does anyone know where I could pick up an assembly for my lathe? Everything I’m seeing on eBay is from different machines as you can see from the photos and only only need the two gears, the other two gears appear to be in good condition.

The serial number stamped on the way is KUHN D 8373 S.

Thank you,

Below is what the housing looks like with the nut on top I forgot to set, I really need a service manual for this thing I suppose.

Clausing was still selling new old stock a few years ago. No idea if they still do. Call them.

If you cannot find a new old stock unit. You might consider getting a gear blank such as a Boston gear unit. Then enlarge the bore and cut dog teeth in the front end. It's a rather complex shape I realize. Just a thought

I called them and they are sending me a catalog. I found the one gear on eBay, the other gear that is on the shaft with the threads is unobtainium as far as I can see. I may end up being screwed, hopefully not and fingers crossed.

I appreciate the suggestion but that is way beyond my skill level. That gear is so complex I wouldn't even know where to begin. If I remove the feed idler gear on top I think it should be able to free wheel. I may just do that and not have autofeed. It would suck not being able to cut threads but at least it will be usable.

Another option is to drive the leadscrew from the tailstock end with a dc gearmotor. It’s been done.

But there’s nothing in an Atlas you can’t find for sale. Keep looking, and those gears will turn up.

MyMachineShop.net was always a good place to check for Atlas parts, both new and well as used. It seems to have changed ownership recently so is a new user interface but the product range still looks like the old site. New contact person too -- Jeff instead of Joel -- so maybe Joel retired out. I was always very happy with Joel's service but haven't bought for a while so can't say if that's the same or not. Here's the new link...

From your pictures, it looks like the teeth may have been repaired previously. In the pictures there appear to be pins or set screws in the base of the teeth that failed. So, it may not have been your fault they failed.

The circled gear? Buy two of the opposite one and fit it to the other. Machine off the broken gear teeth and the dog clutch teeth thus leaving a stub to press on the new gear that you bored to fit the stub. You can pin it or use permanent Locktite as well as a pin.
