I'm new here and am new to an Atlas mk2. The previous owner apparently did exactly what the manual says not to do and machined with the t-slot tool holder extended too far out and it thus broke. Can this be welded and repaired or is there a good source for a replacement? Also in storage they have lost the gibs apparently. Where can I get replacements for these or what can I use?

Wow I've been looking at several posts on here about this lathe and downloaded the Craftsman manual as well. First I'm amazed that Sears actually claims to carry the parts. Of course the tool post slide costs more then I paid for the machine.

Next I've found you have to undo what previous owners have done. I couldn't disengage the direct drive system in order to use the back gear...upon enough inspection I found that the previous owner had lost, like many people on here have mentioned, the small 1/8" ball bearing and spring. Their solution was to remove the snap ring and use a spring behind it to hold the sleeve engaged in direct drive. Remove the snap ring and spring and sleeve to run back gear. Works...Not quite as convenient but it works.
