Are strings a good thing?

I have a PM1127 lathe and I get chips and a lot of long strings. When you see strings, is that a good thing? I use carbide insert tooling. Does it mean I'm taking off too much or not enough? Strings just get tangled up all over and I have to fight it while I'm turning. I usually take off about .020 on all types and size materials. Also the chips that come flying towards me, so I gotta step quite a ways back.

Also, what's a good type of steel to get that turns nicely and where do I buy them for cheap online?

Too light a cut and not enough feed . The ideal chip looks like corn chip . I may add , they tend to be hot , get one down your shirt and you'll be a jumping ! :) As far as what steel is best , depends on the application . Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you fight those strings while your lathe is running , that is if you like your digits intact .

For easy to turn steel, get some 12L14. However, it's not the best for some applications. Not quite as strong, rusts easier, and can't be welded. Every type has a reason for existing, so you need to match the metal to the project.

Strings can be dangerous..... they're like a 12" razor blade under power......as above, more depth, more feed.

Vegas should have a steel outlet.
+1 on 12L14. Good stuff, it'll make you look like a pro.
Joe Pi. has a video on chips and what is good and bad and why.

I use a string on my finger so I don't forget something, but at my age I forget anyhow. Then I forget to remove it so I get nameless multiple strings on my finger which I have to eventually remove with a weed eater.

Whatever you do never and I mean never ever try to do somethung with that mess with your hands and fingers. Also if you use a pc. of rod with a bent section to remove the mess make sure there is no handle so if it gets pulled in it slides out of your hand. Huge respect here. Read up on chip breakers for hss and carbides and how feeds affect your chips. Your lathe is very powerful with its gear reduction.

I found a place locally that sells 1018 steel. No 12L14. Is 1018 any good?
