I am looking at regrinding a spindle, anyone near central OH (and by near lets say 100 miles) have a cutter that wouldnt mind doing a small spindle (2" diamter 8" length). I want to change the angle on the spindle to accept er collets, kind of a project/experiment. I have a lathe, and a dremel, but i am not sold on my ability with those (and i havent ground on my lathe... and i don't want to start)

Why make a new spindle on your lathe? If would not be hardened and ground but it would be very useable. I made a ER40 adapter for my lathe (Grizzly 10 x 22) and it has become my favorite holder. This is a picture of the adapter.

The adapter is made from 1018. The ER nut was bought from one of the online suppliers. The taper was established using the method outlined in "Cutting shallow tapers". It is not as hard as you might think.

I think making a new spindle would involve alot. if i keep the head/spindle together i can keep concentricity. not have to worry about meassing up the bearings etc. but i'll give it some thought).

While I don't have a cutter grinder, Precision Cutter Grinder in Elida, OH, probably could help you. Gary Schneer, owner would be the person to talk to. 419-339-9959. Email ptg@wcoil.com. I used them when I had my business for all my cutter grinding. Not too far from Elida.
