Hello,

We're looking at replacing a 50+ year old 1530 Clausing lathe with a new PT-1440GT, but the very low price point on these scares us a bit. Is there anyone on here in the Portland area using one of these, or something similar? We'd like to get some first hand feedback, and if possible take a look at the machine or run a test part.

Thanks
Ryan

I don't have a dog in this race but just wanted to say wow! That is some kind of build log @davidpbest Well done!

It would be a fine replacement - IMO.
Just need to do a search here on the H-M site, and browse the relevant results.
That will give you a good idea of the quality and support you get from P-M.

If you are looking for something a bit more substantial, I would look at the 1440TL or 1640TL. I had a 1340GT and have a ERL-1340, and have worked with both the 1440GT and a 1640TL lathes. They all are very nicely made machines at their respective price points and capable of very fine work. These styles have been around for many years, there are a number of YouTube reviews on both the 1340/1440GT. If you need a more industrial type lathe with a bigger work envelope than I would also consider the 1640TL. The TL series are about twice the weight of the 1440GT, have a one piece cast iron base, they have universal gearboxes with imperial/metric threading dials, wider ways with a pump oiler lubrication system, much larger steady rest/follow rest, etc. You can checkout the manual on their site.

Or this, PM1440TV, in between the 1440GT and the TL series. 5HP motor, 7.5 HP Yaskawa VFD, D1-4 nose, 9 inch bed width, one piece cast iron base.

Special order, not in the PM website.
