So the title says it all. I have noticed a small puddle under the head of my PM727. Since I really don't use it much anymore, the 1 drop a day adds up after a month or so. Looking at the schematic, there is a seal behind each know, on the shaft that shifts the gears. I took the set screw off a knob and it isn't coming off without a fight. Anyone ever take a knob off the gal-dern thing before?
#69 is the seal(s) #15 is the knob that's fighting me.

If the set screw is the only retainer, I would gently use opposing screw drivers/thin pry bars. I have plastic car door panel removers I use sometimes for such things

I would lightly tap it with a soft faced hammer straight IN to see if it could be broken free. I would bet some of that leaky oil ran down the shaft and dried, and is currently "gluing" the knob on the shaft. Wetting it with some kind of mineral spirits (paint friendly solvent) might help. As I don't know the composition of the paint, I can't be specific to what may affect it.

I have removed the knobs on my 727. You must also remove #18 19 17 16 in the diagram. You also need to remove the set screw #14 like you did and if memory serves me correctly there may be a second set screw under #14

@tweinke I was wondering about those parts, but it APPEARED they were just a detent ball and spring etc so I just passed on them. Honestly if it did break free I would be smarter to have those removed already, but as they aren't even budging, I just passed on them. Guess I'll revisit those. Maybe I'll shoot PM an email but I feel like those guys are busy enough.

It is almost impossible to catch the balls when taking it apart in my experience, but to get the knobs back i do not think you can do it with out removing all those parts. There was some posts about doing this awhile back.

So the damn thing has a set screw UNDER the 1st set screw...got it now. Same kind of deal like the quill alignment grub screw...I should have known this by this point. Thanks guys... hopefully the next guy searching find this quickly Interesting that I already subscribed to Lee Peedin (the Pragmatic Lee on YouTube)

Was just thinking about you a few minutes ago, when I had mine apart I installed a spring between the two quill lock pieces. I do not remember where I saw that done but it did make the lock operation seem much smoother.
