Hi All

A few of you suggested I make my own rotary broach on my other Rotary Broach post.
I am interested in this approach and seeing if a steel broach in a press will do the job. (No actual rotary action.)
However, the cost of the v-slot cutter alone is already steep.
So, is anybody willing to make the broach for me for a fee? (Hopefully not braking any site rules here.)
If you lookup the Bourns guitar pots with the serrated shafts with 18 teeth, .236” diameter, you’ll see what I am going to push the finished brass knobs onto.
The broach itself would need the cutting/plunging end to be concave so it needs to be cut with a ball end mill. I don’t know if the broach would need to be tapered from the end since it’s not going in an actual rotary broach tool holder.
Anyways, any takers?

Maybe sacrilege but have you considered a press fit insert? Newark has an aluminum knob on special for $.274 ea., 6mm splined shaft, 18 splines.

You could turn down the knobs to a press fit bushing.

Hi RJ
I actually have a hundred plastic press-fit inserts. I don’t like them. Their OD requires me to make a much bigger ID on my knobs, which comes scary close to my outter grooves, thus requiring me to make the knobs longer than I desire to.
