After shortening 2 hss blanks to the point that they won't fit in my tool holder trying to get a good grind that would cut, I started looking around and found this: Alisam Grinding Jig

Second item when scrolling down

Is this worth trying? Anybody have any first hand experience with one of these? Anecdotal experience? Heard about them from a buddy of their 3rd cousin's ex-wife's neighbor?

I know that I'm eventually going to have to learn how to hand sharpen lathe bits but until that happens, does this look like an acceptable cheat?

link doesn't work.
it's something that should not take too much time to learn to rough out. To get good at, it takes practice.

I am not the OP, but link is here:

Sorry @JoatTX , I have no experience with one.

I know the big HSS tool bit grinding thread from @mikey is now so huge that it could be intimidating.
However, my advice is to go thru it, get the models that were being shipped around and practice with the models beside you.
It is a worthwhile skill to put some time to.

Sorry about that, link worked for me just fine. I copied and pasted the url below the link so maybe it works now?

Thanks brino, I guess I'm channeling the younger generation and want instant gratification...

Do what us cheap guys do . Mount the short HSS blanks into a boring bar and grind what you need . They're great for fly cutters , boring heads etc . Wow , I clicked brino's link and found myself in 2012 . :encourage: Nothing has changed over the years though , dull and broken taps , end mills etc are never worthless if you know how to re-purpose them . :)

Those grinding jigs are nice but can be tricky to use if you just have an off the shelf grinder with not a lot of flat table space to move it around. I usually clamp a 4 x 12 thin plate to mine before I use it because I only have a craftsman bench type grinder. Having said that the tool is useful to me but I'm surprised how much they want for the one in your link. Seems like I paid about half that for an NOS South Bend kit a couple years ago.

Being cheap I'll probably end up practicing a lot more and figure it out before I convince myself to order one...lol. Unless I find a good deal on one on ebay.
