On the face of my apron there is a hex nut right below carriage travel/ power feed selector knob that turns all the time and comes off now and then, if I tighten it , carriage wont move ?????

Got a picture? It's probably the miter gear nut and it's a special nut (9-190 on my 10" atlas). Did someone m,aybe lose it and replace it with something that fits?

Can you get a second nut on it and lock them down?

I just picked up a Craftsman 12" lathe model 101,07403. Timken Bearings, Lots of info and parts out there. So far the machine looks great but clunking in the carriage. Probably a MITRE gear or other. I need to break it down. The machine is dirty but not rusty. No quick change on this model. But it will serve me once I get the carriage smooth and a new back gear that has two chipped teeth. Looking for the right motor as this one is a replacement 1/3 HP. Got it pretty cheap. I sometimes use a really old but nice 10" South Bend at work but I do not cut gears and have to relearn for my retirement next year.

+ 1 on the miter gear nut, easy to check, just take out the screws from lead screw bearing at the r/h end of the bed then pull out the lead screw, after checking the half-nuts are open.

The apron can then be dropped off after removing the two screws or socket head bolts in the top of the carriage, it may need a tap with a soft hammer as there are locating pins that can be tight.

If there is a problem you can remove the gear and use the lathe but without a powered cross feed.
