Another simple whatzit

I got this in an auction lot a couple of weeks ago. No help from the other box contents - it was a very mixed lot of rust related to woodworking/metalworking/trash.

The only mark is an R in a diamond which, surprisingly, Alloy Artifacts (a website I like with lots of old-maker info) has no information on, so I don't even know who made it.

It reminds me of something you'd use like a pulley puller but there's just a clamp part, nothing to pull with. Tightening the screw moves those two jaws closer, loosening moves them farther. And that's about all I can tell that it does.

Looks like an old fashioned pipe flange spreader.
Put the points on either side of the pipe flange, tighten the screw, the points dig in between the flange faces, spreading the flange to change the gasket.
Thats my best guess.

Thats a pretty good guess Jimi.
Just need to put my glasses on to read it :))

Thanks. I'd never heard of such a thing - googled it and found some pics and yep, that's it.
EDIT: I should add - thanks for the other guesses too. Until this correct one came along I was gonna go with the chain link pin dimpler just because it had the technical term "thingy" in the title.

Looks the the going rate was $1.75.... I've got $2.00 burning a hole in my pocket should you ever want to part with it.. <grin>

VintageRCR, Looks like you could hit a rummage sale for an old C-clamp (boot sale, G-Cramp for those east of the pond) and make your own. :)
