Finish restoration of 1946 Clausing 100 lathe. The lathe is mounted on a full enclosed Clausing 1/8” steel metal cabinet. I want to have more rigidity this time around. So bolted down to fairly level concrete floor and shimming the bed at the headstock mount and tailstock mount.

Leveling using a Starrett 98 6” level. Not getting consisting reading vee way to vee way with a flat to flat way (using 123 blocks) reading.

Used the tailstock base as a sled to get the bed trued. Is this good enough to do the two-collar test? Any more suggestion or comments welcome.

More than having the level reading in the center of the level is consistency in the reading.
If you are a line high at the chuck and carry it the whole length of the bed, that's level.
Using the tailstock as a sled is not a bad idea.

Thank you for quick reply. From my reading, the main reason is confirmed the ways are parallel and bed not twisted. Used the tailstock base since I thought be must accurate regarding less wear. Using the carriage, the bubble did not move that much.

OK will finish assembling the lathe and do the two-collar test.
