Another bad morning

Yeah, I hit a few when I lived in Northern Michigan.

Suspect it was even worse for the deer though....

Last one I hit was a clean head shot. After dropping my mom and daughter off (was returning from volleyball) I headed over to the local AmVets hall and asked if anyone wanted a buck. Local sheriff wrote out a tag on the spot and that buck didn't go to waste.

It's just about that time of year now....

Only found a broken antler, otherwise, there would be venison hanging........

I feel this.

Just handed the deductable and the insurance check to the body shop for the wife's brand new '25 Subaru. Hit a deer with 2500 miles on the odometer...

I smacked a deer in Utah, at 65 mph at night. Three deer crossed the road in front of me, got the last one. Had all kinds of smoke after impact. Thought I holed the radiator. Instead it was just a pushed in fender hitting my passenger front tire. Someone stopped and helped me pull out the fender from the tire. Drove into the next town and went into the general store to report the accident to the state police. Proprietor told me that mine was the third deer hit that week.

It was weird turning in my rental vehicle at Salt Lake City airport, but everything was fine. Fortunately, that was a work trip.

Was in Tooele, if you know what they do there. Big base there. Took an hour to drive from the edge of the base to range control, as it was about 65 miles. Had to check in there everyday to get a briefing and a detailed schedule. Didn't want to be in the area when they were testing the nasty stuff nearby.

A few years ago I crested a hill in the dark and as the headlight beams came down out of the sky they lit up a deer in the middle of the road.
It was a narrow road with deep ditches so I stayed in my lane.
The drivers side corner of my bumper hit it good in the shoulder and it's back end swung around and mashed my front panel.
When I made the call to police they asked if it was dead. Since there was blood coming out the nose I said yes.
Next they asked if it was still on the road, I said it was and they asked if I could drag it off.
I dragged it off to the road shoulder.
Unfortunately I was not setup to take it myself and didn't know any hunters in the area at the time.

Luckily it was just coming into winter and I had recently installed part of the snow plow harness on that jeep cherokee.
The bumper was extended forward about eight inches. Other than the bend in the bumper and some minor fender dents I got out unscathed.
The next day I found our dog very interested in the vehicle and specifically a tuft of hair caught in the front tire bead.

When I first saw the deer its front legs were spread a bit and head down...... the only thing I could think of was that it was liking the salt off the road.
Do deer do that?

I got lucky.

Deer was my first guess, they are dumb as a post.

I had five deer claims in an eighteen month period, The first was when the car was two weeks old and good for $3.5K (1999 dollars). My insurance agent, who is also my best friend, called me up. A VP at American Family asked him "what about this guy?". He vouched for me and called me and advised me not to have any more claims for a couple of years. To AmFam's credit, they have never increased our premiums because of claims and that includes two "at fault" claims that my wife had.

After I retired, my deer claims dropped to zero. One of the benefits of retirement is no more driving during pre dawn or dusk.

I've never hit a deer but I've had a couple hit me. One ran right into the side of my vehicle.

A week or so ago I had one run between me and the vehicle a short distance ahead of me. Can't believe it didn't hit me.

With every one that I have hit, I was so disgusted with the whole thing that I left the venison. In Wisconsin, anyone can harvest a road kill deer. The carcass has to be tagged but law enforcement or the DNR are too diligent about it. When my brother in far norther Wisconsin comes across a fresh road kill, he will retrieve it.

The law requires you report a road kill and remain at the scene until a Sheriff's deputy can investigate. Presumably to determine if you have been drinking. On one occasion, the deer that I hit was at a location where there was no cell service and the car was driveable so I just went home and reported it then. The deputy that I talked to read me the riot act about leaving the scene and asked me if I had been drinking. I told him that I was coming home from work and had a car load of groceries, including frozen food. I said that if he wanted to test for alcohol, he better come soon as I was about to have couple of beers.

My wife hit one some years ago. She called me first and I asked her if she had anything to drink as she had been to dinner and a concert with a friend. She shot back that I should know better as she has a strict personal rule about no alcohol if she will be driving in the next 24 hours. The deputy arrived as I did and the first question he asked was how much had she had to drink.
