This may be well known but was new to me.
I'm turning some 70mm dia carbon steel and was getting a lot of chatter.
The HSS tool bit has been used on mild steel and aluminium of various diameters with no problems.
I thought I would try increasing the back rake, only a couple of degrees but it was like chalk and cheese.
Smooth cutting with no trace of chatter, problem solved.
I really should go back and regrind all my bits to the numbers given in many texts.
