I have an Atlas 10' lathe. model qc-42 serial number 002818. I aquired it in pieces and trying to get it assembled. I got the legs and the bracket that holds the motor and countershaft. I cant seem to find any information on how it mounts up. I also have seen some lathes that have wood between the lathe and the legs and others are mounted directly to the legs. Is the wood just a preference?

Mounting the lathe on a thick wood tabletop gives the best results. The machine will perform better overall and have less chatter and better surface finish

If you go to the Downloads section of this Board you will find a 1945 Atlas catalogue that shows several depictions of the 10f countershaft assembly and how it's mounted. There is also a document in Downloads that talks specifically about the countershaft assembly.

That 1945 catalogue also shows the stand legs that you're talking about. They show a hardwood top between the legs and the lathe, providing the rigidity that @markba633csi is describing, along with a wooden shelf mounted near the bottom of the legs that provides additional rigidity.

HTH, and welcome to the Board!
