hello I am putting together a lantern tool post for my vintage Hendey lathe ...I would like to get some holders RH LH ST cutoff etc for my lathe...

I am not exactly sure what size holders but I think the #2 holders will work..

It would be nice if these holders will accept 1/2 bits

Thanks

Lawrence

You might be wanting to keep everything authentic to the vintage lathe. But vintage does not mean better in the realm of tool holding. For years I was stubborn, sticking to using lantern type tool posts. I even made a better lantern tool post for my 16" lathe and went to the trouble of hardening it.

Finally I got a good Aloris tool post used. It has been SO much better in rigidity, ease of tool changing, and saving of time, improved finishes,I can only say get a modern tool post like an Aloris. At least get a wedge type Phase II. Enco has them on sale right now for the same price as piston types in the A and B sizes. Plus free shipping, but I forgot the code OCT---. They will probably honor it even if you don't know it.

+1 on George's suggestion of an Aloris Type toolholder.

by all means get a lantern type toolpost and holders and try working with them.
they did the job for more than 100 years.
OR
you can produce superior work with more rigidity by putting a modern toolpost.

i was a purest as well, on my Atlas TH42 10" lathe.
i, not knowing any better, thought the lantern toolpost just looked cool.
i found myself turning metal alright until it came time to part work off
that's when you will find the true meaning of aggravation.
parting requires rigid set ups and lantern's don't offer the same stiffness.
after fouling a few jobs,i figured out that with my time loss + fouling of work + having to redo work + breaking of parting tooling= the need for a better way
i bought an import version from Shars of the Aloris AXA 100 piston type. cost me about $100 shipped
it was the single best thing i ever did for that lathe. it cut my parting issues dramatically.

Atlas lathes are not the most rigid animals out there, but, the issues that were not solved by the use of the qctp were due to the lathe's limitations and my disregard for those limitations.

i have some williams toolholders laying around, i'd be happy to get them to you.

Enco October code - "OCTF49" free shipping over $49 order. Ends 11/3/14, but they always have a code to take the last one's place.

Agreed on the cutoff tool making trouble in a lantern tool post. When I had an Atlas lathe,I made a simple block of steel about 2" tall and 1 1/2" square to mount a turning tool in. Even that made the lathe cut a lot smoother. A modern type tool post is definitely MUCH better for cutting off. No comparison.

Hello again, I think what people need to understand about lantern tool post..... is size matters!...if you have a small size lathe and are parting off 1" dia piece remember its the same forces at work here so a larger lathe will have a larger tool post and can deal with it much better...I think this is where the lantern tool post gets into trouble again size does matter and I am going to do some comparo's with my other tool posts...but i need some holders for the lantern post anyone want to give up some of theirs?
