I hope I can get some help with my 6913 lathe. I am rebuilding the apron( and almost everything else) in my Clausing. In the apron the Pinion clutch assembly has been messed with by the previous owner so I would like to know how to adjust the clutch. When I got it torn apart I noticed the balls were not visible through the holes in the plates. So I took the assembly apart and lined up the balls with the holes but I did not know how to set the tension adjustment on the plates. This has a nut with a locking washer that secures the nut in the proper position. I am sorry if this does not make since, but it hard to explain. Has anybody out there have any knowledge about this part?
Thanks

Why not tighten the nut until the clutch doesn’t slip on a heavy cut?

That would mean dropping the apron and going through the top of the apron to make the adjustment and reinstalling it to test again. I might have to also remove the lead screw.

I contacted Clausing service tech and they said 40/45ft lbs on the apron clutch. Seems like a lot but that is what they said to torque it at. I am not sure the nut will hold up to that. I am scared to try that much on it! Now I have to make a socket to fit the special nut. Here is the kind of crude socket I made to tighten the clutch nut. I think I want to replace the plate with the holes for the balls. The clutch has slipped multiple times because the idiot crashed the carriage into the chuck multiple times! If anybody wants to borrow my socket I would loan it to them. It ain't pretty but it worked!
