Following on with the rebuild of my Hercus, I have incorporated a DRO on the carriage.
I had purchased a couple of DRO's with 600 mm scales for my mill and after installing one on the x axis of the mill, I decided to fit the other DRO to the lathe and get a shorter one for the mill y axis.

I had started with fabricating an accesory bracket for a travelling lamp on the rear of the saddle, and whilst I was standing on the wrong side of the lathe decide that a DRO would just fit perfecly there. Drilled and tapped a couple of mounting pads that were cast there.

The accessory bracket was just a piece of angle

that I drilled to suit the lamp, plus a couple of other random holes, some tapped, some not, for future, (as yet unthought of) use.

The scale was attached by fixing it directly to the bed.

And then the small brackets included with the kit was modified to mount the pick up to the saddle under-side.

The bracket needed to be in 2 pieces to allow assembly, and future disassembly.

I even thought far enough ahead to keep the accessory bracket low enough to clear the cross slide:lmao:

I am not sure yet whether to mount the display to the carriage, probably to the operator's right of the lamp, or higher up on a tool rack to the rear and far right of the lathe.
I am leaning to the first option as that will be nearer to the work even if it is more exposed.

As I didnt want to run the pickup into the mounting brackets at the end of the scale I knocked up a quick and dirty carriage stop that fits in neatly just in front of the headstock and prevents me from running the carriage beyond a certain point. At the other end the tailstock prevents me from reaching full travel there.

I see your adding DRO,s on both machines ;)
Your going to like this, and in a very short time you will probably add another scale to the crosslide. It will make your life easyer with the DROs on both machines. The centre mounted carriage stop is a great idea too.
Nice addition, and good job!

Looking good so far Phil should be very handy. I would like to know where did you get those Dro's.

Paul,

Check out Eagle America at http://www.eagleamerica.com/product/v424-0160/measuring_and_layout

They are a woodworking tool supplier with a good selection of iGaging DRO sets up to 35" long. I added them to my mill and I don't know how I got by without them all this time.

...Doggone it, guys. Why did you have to bring this up? Just going to the site to get the address for you made me order a pair for my Hercus as well.

hahahahahahahaaaha , See what you started with this DRO post! (':yikes:')('')

If you remove the rail mount from one end, the DRO will read about 2 3/4" longer than the stated length. The sensor does a good job of supporting the rail. You may only need the 6" one for the cross-slide. On the other hand, its easy to cut off any length you don't have room for. The rail for the 6" DRO is actually about 10 1/2" long.

I'm planning on mounting the sensor on my cross-slide and using only one rail bracket at the rear of the saddle. I'll have to incorporate the rail mount into the saddle bracket for the taper attachment that's on my project list.

Thanks Mike
I ordered a 6 and a 35 my lathe has 8' bed but I have never use it.

Paul

thanks for all the comments fellas.
I ordered the DRO's from ebay, $40 each.
You can also increase the operating length by not using the mounting brackets that are supplied, and drilling and mounting the scale on posts, as I did on my mill installation.

Cheers Phil

12 is using the same ones we've all hooked into. They sure save me a lot of time on my mill.

Darn it. I got sucked in as well. Just ordered the 12" and 35".
