This is a wooden chess board I made ages ago for my kids, made from Silky Oak and Jarrah, the squares aren't perfectly square and are more rectangular as I didn't have many tools at the time. But the kids seem happy enough with it.
The Silky Oak was from a piece of 3" square timber that must have been used for stacking on a truck and had fallen off and was lying on the side of the road where I had stopped, and the Jarrah was a bit of left over from a table I built.
Cheers
