I was wondering if steel dowels are case hardened? or 4140? or? I have a bunch of these and I need to bore a hole and thread the hole in the ends

dowel pins can be made of different materials. some are soft. some are case hardened and some hardened through. If you are planning on tapping the ends you might break a few taps. You can always buy Pull Dowels that are already tapped on one end.
