i'll start with an apology , i simply forgot to take pictures while i was working this morning .

so anyhoo , i picked this veterlli up a few days after christmas for my my own present , for the princely sum of $125

she isnt in to bad of shape for her age ( 140 odd years old ) bore is still bright and shiny and while the furnature shows some dings and dents the wood is all sound and crack/rot free .
so all in all a great candidate for a shooter , to do that first we must convert it from rim fire to center fire . in this case its a rather easy conversion

first thing i did was strip the bolt and center it up in my 4 jaw chuck and drill a hole in the center of the bolt face with a #52 (.064) drill for the new firing pin .

next step was to make a firing pin , what i did was rather simple , i modified the origonal firing pin , i used a grinder to grind a bitoff the two legs that protruded past the bolt face to strike the case origonaly and then drilled a hole in the center and silver soldered in a extra rcbs decapping pin to act as the new firing pin .
i also had to grind a bit off the two legs on the rear of the pin / carrier that the striker sits in between to fit it back in the bolt body .

then all that was left to do was reassemble the bolt , check that the pin protruded out far enough to fire a primer , but not so far as to pierce one

a viola ... a finished converted bolt . ready to fire once its reassembled . except for one minor hiccup .
a person just cant buy cases for the .41 vet , most people who shoot these use either the .348 w or the 8mm label as a parent case to make them .
digging threw my stash i lucked out and found 5 lonely 8mm label cases .

so i promptly shortened them up a bit and using a bit of bullseye and some cream of wheat filler i went ahead and fire formed the cases .

i also manages to slug the bore , groove dia measures .431 so its going to be a bit big for me to use my .429 dia .44 bullets , but when its not snowing and a bit warmer i'll go ahead and load up my 5 cases just so i can that i shot until i get some more cases and a proper bullet to use .

it was a nice easy project ,.. total time for everything including making the 5 cases was about 2.5 hours of not working hard .

i cant wait to shoot it

the 84 degree working conditions was provided by old sparky here , good thing as it was 15 went i went out and lit a fire

Seems??? Like older Lyman molds cast bigger bullets. My old Keith run .433. have some old 38 molds run .360 plus. Guy could chuck up a mold and cut it bigger. ???

i could lap the mould out a few thou to make it a proper dia for the vetterli , but i only have the 1 .44 mould and it shoots so well in my blackhawk i dont want to mess with it . i doubt being a bit undersized will hurt it any , i'll use a soft alloy like 20-1 and it should bump up just fine i think .

my plans are to eventually get set up and be able to make my own molds , i would like to use a heeled bullet like it originally used .

Good plan. It slip my mind it uses a heel bullet. so its heel bullet or a hollow base bullet. I go same road your thinking. Have fun . Great rifles.
