I'm thinking ahead on a 4 jaw independent chuck for my 7X lathe. Is bigger better - is it better to get a 5 inch v. a 4 inch, or will I regret having the bigger as smaller work more difficult to hold?

In very general terms, bigger chucks allow bigger work. Just be aware that you will lose clearance for the amount the jaws stick out over and above the chuck diameter. If you open it up to grab a larger piece, there is a chance that the jaw will hit the ways. A small increase in chuck size will generally work out fine.
