Figured I would try a few 3D printed gears as a test for a Craftsman 109 lathe. I have a full set of the original gears so this is just an experiment. These are printed out of ABS which is considerably stronger than the PLA gears you more commonly see. Since the 109 is a pretty light duty lathe anyways I feel these will probably hold up pretty well.

Excellent!
I have wanted to see how well they hold up.
I am watching this thread.

They look like great prints! I'd bet good money they'll give years of service

Do the plastic gears run quieter than the metal ones , Chrysler used plastic gears on the cam sprockets of engines for years. I changed a lot of them when they failed but they were usually good until the chain got worn around 100,000 miles. Then it would skip and break the teeth off. TJ

I have not had a chance to run them yet, but others seem to think they are quieter and hold up well under normal use.

I think its a great idea with the advances in plastics, i'm sure they are the way of the future who would have thought of this 10 years ago. :)

I have about 250 kg of Delrin blanks in various diameters & thicknesses that were given to me by a company moving to new bigger premises who cut all manner of gears from blanks for all sorts of machinery so printed stuff ought to be OK .

The only thing I can think of that might be a bit iffytransmitting power on an Atlas 10 is the forward revers gear box sliding collet/ dog cutch which might separate if heavily loaded ..but that could be a fantastic safery factor if you crash the cross slide or over load the cut /. New die cast Zamek ones are about $ 69 USD plus shipping on eBay US . Be nice to also have a 3D print available for that and one the lead screw tail stock end anchor bracket to take a turned up oiled brass bushing or a needle roller bearing cartridge . .

I just acquired a Craftsman 109 that is missing the gear box & gears. I have downloaded a coulple of 109 manuals but the gear info is missing.

What are the original gears (by teeth number) that came with the 109 and what gears makes a complete set?

Thank you!!

Unfortunately, that information is not known to exist for any model except the 109.21280 (of which only two are known to exist). And I do not know for certain that all models of the AA latthes use the same number of tooth counts. Probably your only option is to acquire a copy of the 109.21270 manual and count it from there. From the parts list of all of the gears, make a list and assume that at least one will be required for some thread pitch. Then go through the threading chart one thread at a time and note the number of times that a second or second or second and and third gear is required. Note that full access to Downloads requires Donor status (any level). Non-donors can see what is there but not download it.

I did that. There are 12 gears that are on the Threading Chart that have part numbers. Part number came from the 109.21270 (AKA Model 80) parts listing:

16T gear is on the chart but it is the "spindle stud gear" and it is a combo gear -16T/32T and is never changed.; that is used for "Front & Back" settings. There is a single changeable 32T gear that is used elsewhere. All part number have an "A-" prefix.

So a complete set would be the 12 gears listed above.

3D printed gear listings on eBay for the 109 show 22T and 28T gears but I have no clue how they are used. They are NOT listed on the Threading Chart for the 109. I have also seen a "metric" converison gear that is a 37T/47T combo gear but I do not know how it is used. I suspect it would replace the 16/32 spindle stud gear but how the other gears are set I do not know. I would hope that instructions would come with the gear. Once my 109 is fully working I will probably pick up this "metric" gear.
