Large diameter parts that are relatively short. Think pipe flanges and the rotating parts in a tank turret. The big advantage is gravity is working with you.

I operate CNC vertical lathes at work... we use them overhauling jet engine cases.

We have 3 with 48" chucks and one with a 60" chuck- all CNC machines. We also have 2 manual VTLs with 30" chucks.
