I picked up an old Buffalo 15 drill press last year and would like to replace the 1/2 HP single phase motor with a 3-Phase motor and VFD so I have speed control.

I already have a VFD, so now I need to find an appropriate motor 3-phase 220-240V motor.

The original motor is a Frame C56.

I'm not sure if I should go 3/4 or 1HP?

Any suggestions would be welcome.

drilling isn't usually a big hp draw unless you are using very large bits
if you are going to be running at very low speeds with the VFD,
you may wish to go with a 1hp motor to retain more torque at very low speeds
i have a 1140 rpm 3/4hp single phase motor on my 14" South Bend DP- it's a beast
