I have a three jaw chuck with an integral R8 taper for a mount. I have racked my brain and can not think of any situation where it would be useful. It came with an older mill and the guy I got the stuff from had never used and said he bought it because it looked cool. Does anyone know of a practical use for it before I send it down the road again with the mill?

If it were 5-C taper, it could be useful, but few work holding devices use R-8; maybe someone on E Bay would think it as neat as you did --- and pay for the honor of owning it.

I'll assume you mean a lathe-style 3 jaw chuck, not a drill chuck (which also has 3 jaws). What size is the chuck?
I've read about some people using a milling machine as a "poor man's lathe," by holding and spinning the workpiece in the spindle and somehow mounting a cutting tool on the table. Your chuck is probably meant for something like that. If you have a lathe, this chuck would definitely be surplus for you. See if you get any nibbles by offering it on Ebay or your local Craigslist equivalent.

The R8 shank has to be removable from the chuck. Take it off and see what you got.

Some pictures would be nice.

I think it might be useful to hold metric shank tooling. If you don’t have metric collets.

Thanks all. Yes, it has a 5” 3 jaw lathe style chuck and the R8 is part of the back of it (China special). I did think of cutting it off but it’s probably not worth the effort based on the quality of the chuck itself. I agree that it is probably intended to allow the mill to be used as a lathe. But I have two lathes so eBay it is!

One of us may have a use for it.
Curiosity is also rampant on this site.
I never heard of such a thing.

I did some looking and there are some small lathes with R8 spindles.

My Tormach CNC cn be used as a vertical CNC lathe. However, it is limited in diameter to the maximum capacity of an R8 collet. A small three jaw chuck with an R8 shank would expand that range. I wouldn't want to go too large on the chuck; 3" or possibly 4" but it would be a useful addition.

I've got a 3" on an R8. Got it before I had a lathe. Very limited usefulness!
