I'm thinking you read it much the same as a contemporary mic but instead of lining up the thousandths with a hash mark on the frame you watch as they pass by the edge of the major scale?
Quoting the Monty Python sketch that I just saw; "Seems a bit silly" ----- B&S made their invention of the micrometer in the very early 1860s, it looked very much like the modern mike, why come along with something so primitive 30 years or more later?
