What do people think of these two lathes? I can't afford the nearly $9k price tag for a 1440GT. The 1440GS is a Chinese lathe, but it has Japanese spindle bearings, hardened and ground gears and shafts, plus it comes with a cast base, foot break, 2 inch spindle bore, and it flips between metric and Imperial threads without change gears.
The 1340GT is about a hundred dollars less if you include the welded steel base. It's a Taiwan machine, the shafts and gears are hardened and ground, but the stand is welded steel, over-all its #200 lighter, only has a 1.5 inch spindle bore, requires change gears for metric and doesn't have a foot break. It is available in 3 phase though.

Having a hard time deciding which is the better deal. Also wondering when the 1440GS will be back in stock...

I own a 1340 GT and have had it for about 7 years. It is a true precision machine and quaity on par with south bend. Chinese machines cant even come close when compared side to side.

Which is the better deal? That would depend on your preferences, and your requirements.

I own a 1340GT w/VFD and agree with borris in that it is a very accurate machine. Accuracy and longevity were my primary requirements. And with the VFD I don't need a foot brake, have a much smoother running 3-phase motor, I have a soft-start function, and have never used my metric change gear. I've had mine about 6 years I think.

Thats tough. To me, the draw to the 1440 would be the 2" spindle bore. Unless you really need the 1" extra on swing, probably irrelevant for most things. It does weigh more, but I suspect most of that would be in the base. Not sure exactly. You can get a larger direct mount 4 jaw chuck on a d1-5 mount than you can for the 1340 so thatd be nice, but again irrelevant unless you actually need it.

The bed is a touch wider on the 1340 at 7.5" vs 7.3 on the 1440. Close enough in my opinion, but that might speak to the rigidness of the 1340. If it were me, and it was (I went through this about 4 years ago) I would, and did get the 1340gt. I have no regrets. I bought the single phase machine because I didn't have the time or knowledge at that point to do a solid vfd setup. I recently purchased a new motor and vfd, looking forward to getting it installed.

In my humble opinion the quality is the better deal, now can you live with the smaller through bore, smaller swing, and other noted differences?

The GS was out of stock last August when I bought my 1440GT and I don't think it has been in stock since.
