The rope type bearings (there are 4 of them) ride the 1/2" round stock to align the saw frame and allow the smooth back and forth motion of the hacksaw. It also keeps the frame rigid to the mast.
The saw in the raised position. The orange headed lever is a cam that attaches to the saw frame via a bicycle chain. When the cam is over center, the frame is locked in the high position. When the cam is released, the saw lowers to contact the work.
