I would like to share my setup to grind the spindle taper, may be it will be useful to someone.
It was very badly pitted apparently from years of misuse so I got the carriage of my small lathe and the grinder.
Without getting into all the long details of what for, I have some diamond bits that are a few thou oversize on OD, and I want to grind them to my needed size. What is used to grind diamonds?
I have a newbie question here. I read in "The Home Machinist's Handbook" by Doug Briney that coarse wheels are better at rapid material removal on soft metals and fine wheels are better at fast removal of hard metals. This seems counter-intuitive. Is this correct?

I recently acquired an Atlas 10 with a 54" bed. It has wear along the first foot or so of the ways. In order to scrape the whole bed back together would I require a straightedge that's around 54" long? Would a surface plate that long work if I scraped both sides in simultaneously?
