I came across the term "wiper insert" at a Sandvik site, apparently for improved surface finish. Mitsubishi's site shows how the corner radius is modified.

More newbie questions:
I am turning a 1.5" piece of 12L14, and have problems with finish.
The tool geometry seems about right, and the edges are all honed. It is M42 HSS --- or is supposedly M42. It has a radius on the nose.
Turning about 500 RPM, and even at 0.0025" feed rate the finish is...
First let me start by saying I'm new to this and fumbling my way around. I have some 6061T6 bar stock and I'm trying to get a good finish on it with carbide inserts. I'm not sure where to start with spindle speed, power feed rates and insert selection. I have tried various spindle speeds from...
Hey there I'm machining my fist steel on my mini lathe, and I can't seem to get a smooth finish.
I've tightened everything the most I can, I'm ground my own HSS tools, to the best of my ability so far I'm running the lathe at about 500~ RPM's.
I'm attaching some photos.
Any advice is VERY...
The short of it is that I'm brand new to machining, just starting on my "new" Atlas 3996 12"x36" that I got a few months ago.
Problem: In turning, I consistently am getting a less than desirable finish on the part. You can feel the ridges in it. Sometimes it looks smeared, and sometimes it just...
Have done few tests last saturday.
The old and slow shear tool was the winner. (at least for my conditions)
IF the diameter was bigger, than the indexable Sandvik insert could have a better result.
[Edit]
Have done a research on materials too...
