Hi all, my latest project has been a Yost 6" bench vise that I picked up for $50 or so a couple years back from an acquaintance. It's really a mammoth, probably overkill for home shop use, but I adore it and intend to keep it. Attached are some photos of where the project currently sits, as well as when I first bought it.
The only snag I've hit at this point is that I need a new handle. Unfortunately my lathe is currently in pieces for its own reconditioning so I cannot turn a new handle. I had the thought of using pre fabricated threaded steel balls with steel round bar threaded on the ends with a die, but I can't find any steel balls large enough! The vise needs a 3/4" inch diameter handle, and commercially available threaded hole ball knobs seem to only go up to a 5/8" diameter hole. Does anyone have any suggestions for a handle?
As an aside, does anyone have info on Yost or maybe this particular vise? I see that they're still around but seem to sell solely imported products these days, their website mentions little of the company history.
