Who knew, learning about reamers can cause head aches.

I hope this is not a thread jack, but...

But has anyone tried using valve guide reamers? I do most are stepped live a .340 lead point to .343 body
Also the common sizes come in .001 increments

Buy individual reamers for the job at hand, they are available in decimal sizes in nearly .0005" increments around the fractions and .001" between.

I only use McM as an example because they are one of the few companies that publish what they stock with pricing. Buying, I shudder at the thought, sets will ensure that you never have a use for a majority of them.

As for other considerations when in use, if you must ream holes with radial slots or cross holes use a sprial flute tool which also often produce better finishes and rounder holes but cost more. If yearning for accuracy in plastic materials such as POM, PMMA, ABS, PTFE, polycarbonate and so on buy a new reamer and keep them for such work, NEVER use them in metals.

Not so hard, buy the tool that will produce the hole required.
