Or do I have to make one? What kind of chuck is this called?

Tony.

I think it is called a spider. I have one on the back end of the spindle bore of my lathe.

You can make one for 5 bucks . A piece of thick wall tubing with 4 threaded holes . Mount in your 3 or 4 jaw chuck . This is a simple tool and project . Make one for the rear of the spindle also . Great for gun work .

Thanks all! Mine is a D1-4 (according to the Precision Matthews website for my lathe model- 1236T)

This issue with the premade spider is the mounting bolts get into the pull studs on the D1-4 spindle. Here's how I did mine. I used 6" aluminum so I could use set screws and not have the bolt head protruding from the spider and potentially smacking your knuckles.
Bought a thick back plate https://www.grizzly.com/products/south-bend-8-1-4-d1-4-back-plate-thick/sb1396 and made a small counterbore to help locate the aluminum plate after I turned the OD.

With a 6" plate and thick backplate, you can space the mounting bolts out far enough to clear the pull studs on the spindle.

I used an 8" backplate to give me a handle to grab and rotate the spindle by hand. I did the same thing with my receiver spider.
