Another dumb newbie question.

I'm making weld nuts that need to protrude 1/4" on either side of an 1 1/4" square tube which gives me an area to weld the nut to the tubing.

I'm using two 2" sections of 1" cold rolled steel.

I need to drill and thread them for a 1/2-13 rod end. My chart says I need a 27/64th hole for the tap.

I was thinking the easiest way to do this is face one end on my lathe (the other end doesn't matter), then drill a small hole (say 1/4) followed by the 27/64 drill (also using the lathe).

Is this the right way?

As long as your drill is cutting on size, just face, centerdrill and plug away. No need to double drill unless you are really short of HP. You should be fine on almost any machine.

thanks! I forgot about the center drill part - I knew I could count on the board!
