Weiss

Gregc,

I was considering them at the time, I have since purchased a used Tida, just this last weekend in fact!
If this becomes more than a hobby, I may take another look!

When I started looking at lathes about 4 years ago, I had looked into Weiss lathes and also the DROPros version, but the main importer kept changing. A couple of things to consider is that the gearbox on this model only has three selections, everything else is change gears. At this price level, that is a real PTA. The chuck if I recall was an odd mount (I think a bolt on), and when I was looking alternate options they were very limited, nothing in the higher quality items without machining some form of adapter back plate. Also I do not believe this model has a power cross feed, the V-F would have both. This is very similar Weiss model with power cross feed: http://www.ebay.com/itm/11-x-28-Hig...able-Speed-Metal-Lathe-JY290V-F-/182501159620

I believe this would be a better option in a new machine at close to the same price: http://www.machinetoolonline.com/PM-1228VF-LB.html
Not a lot of other options in this size with variable speed and a standard chuck mount. Maybe also look at the Grizzly G4003G and PM1236.

mksj,
Did you notice the shipping was 1500 almost as much as they are asking for the machine? (JY290)
The shipping on the URL specified was 300 for the WM290VF at 230 kg or 500#. That seems reasonable.
