VN VAN NORMAN no 24MLA-1512-259

I've had to order a few items to get the overarm dead center finished. My lathe won't do 11 tpi (nearly everything on this mill is 5/8 - 11). This is what I wish to use for the retaining nut.

So, it's high time to dive into the belly & get the sump out!

Then deep cleaning of the sump can begin.

Trying to find Kerosene for the cleanout is a challenge. Sump & Well are nasty.

Been a year & checking on the motor shop ..... They'll move me to the front of the line! Meanwhile, I'll get this assembly broken down & cleaned up.

Sump is still soaking. So, I decided to narrow down the specs on just what this mill can do. There's 24, 24L, 24LA, 24M, 24MA, 24MH & 24MLA. But specs are usually 24L & 24M. My knee travel (vertical) could be either 18" or 23" according to the brochures. 23 it is - though raising to such height seems unnecessary.IMG_20200418_222928992.jpg

Arbor Supports leaking? This is what helped mine: Lubriplate, or similar lithium grease on the bearing seals for 'A' & on the One Shot Oiler for 'A' & 'B'. Not a drop lost in 48hrs! Oh, & for storage keep the arbor bushing above the reservoir. They cannot leak down at all in this position.

Made a spanner to remove the bushing adjuster nut. The manual just calls it Nut 26-473.

The bushing is tapered on the outside with a split, so it can be honed & adjusted back to size when wear causes runout.

It was kinda neat to push the oiler button while honing! Here is the oiler assembly. I put lithium on both sides of narrow section. With an aggressive mash of the button it spits oil like Clint Eastwood spits tobacco in a Spaghetti Western!
