Had the batteries in the Laser tach for another job, so I thought I would check the results on my SB 10 UMD with a flat belt.

The first number is what I got, the number in parenthesis is from the chart in How To Run a Lathe.

123
High1380 (1435)822 (844)488 (502)
Low798 (706)469 (415)277 (244)
Back Gears (in Low)153 (137)90 (80)54 (48)

Comments:

In High I'm running slower than spec, but in low the lathe is running faster. With these results using anything in high speed except position 1 isn't much different than staying in low. Also, I don't like running this old lathe in the fastest setting so it looks like I'll won't be changing the V belt position very often.

Right now I'm using a single phase 120V motor but I still have the original 3-phase motor. I can see why people like to use a VFD with these lathes, because not only do you get the soft start but you can also nudge the motor speed up and down to get some more speed settings.
