Turning wood on SB 9"

Pool (Billiard Cues) and wooden pens are commonly turned using a metal lathe.

The main point as already brought up, the lathe has to be kept clean, there are all sorts of nooks and crannies that dust can get into. Not that the metal dust can't get in there either, but.

Some woods like cedar are very acidic. The acid will do some damage over time, but mostly just discolouration. The Silica's in the wood can be very abrasive.

Treat the lathe the same way that you would when using it with a tool post grinder. Clean, Clean, Clean!

Thank you for all the good responses, As long as everything is cleaned and re oiled it should be fine. If I leave some wood dust in the bull gears it will cut down some of the noise from the wear....lol ......it worked in old diffs and transmissions.
