I'm turning some small PVC caps and am wondering about the safety of the fumes. I'm running fairly low speed and high feed rates as recommended, using a sharp HSS cutter and nothing is getting anywhere near hot enough to melt, barely even warm to the touch, but it still stinks some and I worry that I may still be breathing bad stuff. Anyone have any factual information about low temperature PVC fumes?

I do not have any factual information to go on, but I can tell you that I have machined quite a few items from PVC without ill effect. Yes, you can pick the smell out of the air when machining it, but you can smell it just as much when you cut it with a hacksaw. I also do not think that the temps get high enough at any point in the process to generate any noxious fumes that would be harmful.

If someone else has contrary data, please speak up, as we would all like to know!
