I'm new to the machine tool hobby, don't know when & where to use different size lathe bits :ie 1/4, 3/8, 1/2". should I use a small bit when cutting fine threads ? thanks , chanse

That is one heck of a question if you really think about it. You are wondering what size bit to use for a particular job if I am reading you correctly? The bit size (tool size) normally goes by what size lathe you have. Give us the answer to that and it will be easier to answer your question?

Setup routines can be tedious.
When I purchased my first mini lathe it was equpped with this style tool post:

I could use any size tool that I could secure in the slot however, depending on the tool selected, I had to use shims to adjust the tool on center. That took a lot of the enjoyment out of turning for me.
So I made the change to a QCTP similar to this one:

and machining was suddenly a lot less stressful.
I find that I can still use just about any size tool that I can secure in the slot (ensuring that all set screws make good contact with the body of the tool - some are obviously too large or too small) and alignment on center is quick and easy.
