Hello all, I am just now getting back around to reassembly of my Chinese milling machine. Had it broke down to install new spindle bearings. I do have a question regarding the gibs on this machine. Like most Chinese machines they appear to be cast iron. I would like to polish them up with some sandpaper on my surface plate just to remove some of the rough edges. They are rough as a cod and could benefit from a little refinement. I do know not to remove any material from the scraped faces.just wondering what grit paper would be ideal and if any one has been down this path. Thanks in advance

Didn't you mean "rough as a cob" ? Cod are usually smooth I thought, although I haven't felt one lately :cupcake:

Buncha cod rubbers…..

As to those gibs…. Yeah…. Wow.

Not sure the grit would matter much, then again I didn’t know they still made pall malls.

To remove burrs from the gibs, I would just use a single cut file. What happened to the subject title regarding bearing preload?

Any input on how to properly measure preload is certainly welcome. Been avoiding that part of the assembly, lol. The only way I have ever measured bearing preload is measuring the rotating torque on a pinion bearing setup in a rear differential. I do that pretty often but I’m not sure if that will work here

I think you need to provide a detailed description of the bearing system in order to get a useful answer.

I will post some pictures of the bearing system in just a bit. To sum it up , it’s your typical quill with taper roller bearing top and bottom. There’s really not much else to add. There’s two taper bearings and the spindle, lol.
