Ok so the leather drive belt while new looking had slipping issues when under heavy cutting. Apparently was ordered a little long by previous owner was reaching limit of adjustment. Reading forums on belt ideas and not wanting to take apart head stock just yet decided on serpentine belt with splice and used hog rings for the joint. Am very pleased to say the machine takes a far better cut no slipping and is smooth and quite. 3rd day and it appears to be holding well with 4 rings in joint and ribs facing down. I have to say very happy I tried it.

Leather belts can be easily shortened in a few minutes with Clipper lacing and a Clipper lacing tool. That is the arrangement those lathes had when new. No spindle disassembly is needed.
